Union Day

Enjoying a picnic on Union Day“This yearly pilgrimage………. is indeed unique. Alas there can be few traditions like it, if there are any for a people with our tragic history.  For this very reason perhaps the achievement and security of the years lend a special joy to the festival of re-union which is itself as old almost as the oldest Clongowes memories.” (Stephen Brown. President of the Clongowes Union 1926-27.)

Generally on the last Saturday in May, this is a key event in the school year, the moment when we say good-bye to one class and welcome another to the top of the school. It is also the highlight of The Clongowes Union  Year.  It is really a family and friends event, not unlike a community field day.A range of events takes place, both inside and outside the school buildings, and parents are encouraged to bring a picnic and park around the school grounds. Key events include golf (book early, places are limited) the Rhetoric Mass, which is exclusively for parents and their sons in Rhetoric, and the AGM of the Clongowes Union. Prize giving for various achievements for the boys, selection of the next school captain and secretary and an address by the Headmaster complete the formal part of the day. Informally, the Parents Association arranges sports events like tug of war and races for the younger children, together with face painting and similar fun activities. The date varies each year and the school sends a notification to each family. It’s a great opportunity to bring your own picnic tables chairs and crockery!  Alternately, a lunch is available inside.
