The Clongowes Union Benevolent Association

The Clongowes Union Benevolent Association (formerly known as the Clongowes Union Benevolent Fund) was founded in 1948 by the Clongowes Union as a means of helping less fortunate members.  It is registered as a Charity (Ref. No: CHY 6441), for taxation purposes, and is regulated by a set of rules.  The main object of the Association is to provide such financial or other assistance as the Committee of the Association in its discretion shall think fit for or towards the relief of necessitous members of the Clongowes Union or of necessitous relatives or dependents of living or deceased members of the Clongowes Union or of necessitous current and former pupils of Clongowes Wood College or their relatives and/or partners.

Illness and unemployment are probably the two biggest contributors to financial need. While the pride of many who are genuinely in need (either for themselves or for their family members) can, on occasions, prevent help reaching to them, the Committee has a methodology whereby details of the needy stays confidential but permits help to get to where it will do most good.

The Association has four honorary Trustees, who are: Maurice Tempany, Finbar P. Costello, James A. Lenehan and Julian Chapman. There is also an Administration Committee which is currently composed of Tom Lane, Rev. Fr. Leonard Moloney SJ (ex officio), Michael Moore, Dan O’Connor, Rev. Fr. Michael Sheil SJ, and Peter Sheil.

How Can You Help?

You can help the Association with a donation, no matter how big or small it may be. You may like to consider making a donation through one or more of the following methods:

  1. An immediate donation – As generous as your means allow.
  2. Establish a monthly or annual standing order  with your bank.
  3. A bequest in your will – Your solicitor will frame the appropriate clause, if so instructed by you. Incidentally, a bequest can rank as a Charitable Legacy.

How To Access Help

Please inform the Honorary Secretary if you are in need or know of another old friend in such straits. By passing on the details to us now the need can be addressed in confidence and, hopefully, eliminated.
