Plan of Service

The guiding spirit of the original Plan of Service (1999 – 2004) was the address of Fr. Peter Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., Superior General in Sydney. In that address the Superior General recalled the summary resolution passed at the Bilbao Conference of Jesuit Alumni in 1991 and called for “a complete Plan of Service in every individual Alumni Association”.

The process to update the first Plan of Service began in December 2004, when the Union Committee appointed a Sub-Committee to draft a new Plan of Service (2005-2010). The guiding spirit of the present Plan is the report and plan for maintaining and developing Jesuit ethos at Clongowes, entitled ‘Keeping the Process Going’, which was approved by the Board of Management, and with which the Plan of Service Sub-Committee identified very strongly at an early stage in the drafting process.

During the five-month process drafts were circulated to the members of the Union Committee, the Jesuit community, the Board of Management, staff in Clongowes and representatives of Rhetoric for their comments.

Covering the Union’s relationship with its members, the College, other Jesuit Alumni Associations, the Clongowes Youth Club, the Benevolent Fund and other service projects, the Plan of Service (2005-2010), outlines the Union’s goals and priorities for the year’s ahead.

“The Union identifies strongly with the profile of the Clongowes graduate,” explained sub-committee Chairman, Dick Reeves (OC ’62), “as defined in the ‘Keeping the Process Going’ report;

‘Open to growth; intellectually competent; socially able; culturally aware; physically developed; inspired by Christian values; flexible and adaptive; actively concerned about justice and peace; committed to striving for excellence; having a sense of belonging to the Church and its mission’.”

Congratulations must go to the members of the Sub-Committee – Michael Sheil, S.J. (OC ’56), Rector; Leonard Moloney, S.J., Headmaster; William O’Grady (OC ’70), Union President; Paul Beddy (OC ‘76); Tony Reeves (OC ’99); and Dick Reeves (OC ’62), Chairman – whose efforts have resulted in an excellent document.
